Fuel specification & quality

What is DMA MGO, and why should I specify the grade?

Bunker Fuel Maldives handles enquiries for DMA marine gas oil, not DMX. “MGO” alone can be ambiguous, so state the required grade and specification in the enquiry.

What does a bunker COQ or COA show?

A certificate records test results for a particular batch, such as density, flashpoint, sulphur, viscosity and cold-flow properties. Results can vary between batches, so a historical certificate is an example and does not predict the next delivery.

Safety & flashpoint

What flashpoint should I check before bunkering?

SOLAS II-2/4.2.1 generally prohibits using oil fuel with a flashpoint of less than 60°C, subject to the regulation’s exceptions. Review the applicable specification and documentation for the actual fuel.

Quantity, density & measurement

How do I convert metric tonnes of fuel to litres?

Use litres = (MT × 1,000) ÷ density in kg/L. Density in g/mL has the same numerical value as kg/L; use the density reference temperature shown on the applicable certificate or specification.

Is bunker fuel supplied in metric tonnes or litres?

Supply arrangements may use MT or litres depending on the supplier and transaction. If litres are used, density is needed for a meaningful mass-volume conversion.

Formula: litres = (MT × 1,000) ÷ density in kg/L. Example: 1 MT at 0.8368 g/mL is approximately 1,195.03 L. Temperature reference matters. This does not replace contractual quantity determination, calibrated measurement, volume correction or delivery documentation.

Pricing & supply arrangements

Why can bunker pricing change with quantity?

Quantity can affect supplier selection, logistics and the commercial arrangement. Each requirement is therefore quoted for the specific vessel, quantity and call.

Is barge or transport cost included in the fuel price?

Not necessarily. Depending on the commercial offer and supplier arrangement, transport or barge cost may be included or shown separately. Check exactly what the offer covers.

Can export-related charges apply to a bunker call?

Additional statutory or export-related charges may apply depending on the nature of the call and offer. The applicable treatment should be confirmed for the transaction; no universal rate is assumed here.

Bunker connection & delivery preparation

What bunker connection information should the vessel provide?

Once availability is established, confirm the manifold or connection size, flange details, any reducer or adaptor requirement and vessel-specific connection limitations. Arrangements vary by supplier and setup; 4-inch and 8-inch hoses are examples, not universal requirements.

What safety and fuel documents should be checked?

The vessel should follow its SMS and applicable supplier or port procedures, including fuel documentation, representative sampling, BDN information, sulphur compliance and transfer preparation. This FAQ does not replace statutory, class, flag or supplier requirements.

What should I send for a technical bunker enquiry?

Send the vessel name, IMO number, current or intended position, ETA, product or grade, required specification if applicable and quantity. An approximate ETA is enough to begin an enquiry.
